CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference announced its 2017 Men's Soccer Academic All-MAC team Thursday. A total of 40 student-athletes from the league's six men's soccer institutions were recognized.
Western Michigan led the way with nine selections, while SIUE had a total of eight. Sophomore
Anthony Bowie of Western Michigan was the only All-MAC eligible student-athlete with a 4.0 GPA. Â
All nine Broncos will now be eligible to be voted as Distinguished Scholar-Athletes by the league, an award which began in 2015. Distinguished Scholar-Athletes will be announced later this year.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport and are not of freshman or first-year transfer status. All student-athletes that meet this criteria earn Academic All-MAC honors, a change from in years past when only a select few were named Academic All-MAC but all eligible student-athletes were named honorable mentions. Voting for the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete team will follow the old criteria used to select Academic All-MAC.
Western Michigan had the program's most successful season in 2017, finishing with a 17-4-1 overall and undefeated 5-0-0 MAC record. The Broncos won their first ever MAC regular season championship and made an NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance after garnering the No. 10 seed and defeating UAlbany in the second round for WMU's first ever NCAA Tournament win. The Broncos were ranked in the top 25 in the final 10 consecutive weeks of the season, spending six in the top 10, and reaching as high as No. 4. The Broncos produced the school's first ever MAC Player of the Year in senior
Brandon Bye, while head coach
Chad Wiseman was named MAC Coach of the Year. A total of eight players, including five on the first team, were named All-MAC.
