KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan hockey team completed the weekend sweep of Omaha after a 5-2 win at Lawson Ice Arena on Saturday night.
Wade Allison tallied two goals for the 14th-ranked Broncos (8-4-1, 5-1-0-0 NCHC), who sit atop of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference standings after six conference games. Hugh McGing and Luke Bafia each had two assists on the night, while Colt Conrad had a goal and an assist and Jade McMullen tallied a goal. Sophomore goalie Ben Blacker made 27 saves on the night to earn his seventh win of the season.
WMU jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to two goals by Allison in the span of 13 seconds. Allison's first came at 13:05 in the first period. Conrad fed the puck to Allison and the sophomore forward fired it into the net from the right circle for his seventh of the season. The assist was Conrad's ninth, while Cam Lee also picked up his fourth assist of the season. Seconds later Allison punched in a rebound on a shot by Dawson DiPietro for his eighth of the season. Freshman defenseman Cason Vance also picked up an assist on the goal for his first collegiate point.
Omaha responded early in the second period at 4:02 when Mason Morelli tipped in a shot by David Pope and past Blacker, cutting the lead to 2-1.
WMU pushed the lead back to two when McMullen finished off a two-on-one rush at 5:47 in the second period. McGing raced it up the ice and dished it through the slot to McMullen. The junior forward slid it past UNO goalie Kris Oldham for his third goal of the season.
Freshmen forward Ethen Frank pushed the lead to 4-1 on a short-handed goal at 12:03 in the second period. McGing broke up the Mavericks' cycle in the WMU zone and Frank raced to the loose puck and went off down the ice. The Papillion, Neb., native skated in on Oldham and beat him for his second goal of the season.
Minutes later Fredrik Olofsson finished off a centering pass from Jalen Schulz to cut the lead back to two, 4-2.
Conrad later added an empty-net goal with 1:01 left on the clock to seal the win.
WMU outshot UNO 34-29 on the night. The Broncos killed off five of Omaha's six power plays, including 1:28 of a 5-on-3 advantage. Blacker had 12 of his 27 saves come on the penalty kill.
