KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan redshirt sophomore quarterback Jon Wassink has been named Academic All-District by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Wassink will now be on the ballot for Academic All-America consideration, with those award winners announced in December.

Wassink earned a spot on the District 5 Academic All-District First Team, which is made up of schools from the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve on his/her respective team with a minimum 3.30 cumulative GPA.

Wassink played in eight games this season as Western Michigan's starting quarterback before suffering a season-ending injury. Wassink threw for 14 touchdowns, ran for three and caught two. He completed 124 of 193 passes for 1,411 yards and rushed for another 126. At the time of his injury, he led the Mid-American Conference in completion percentage (.642) and ranked second for pass efficiency (145.4). Those numbers also stacked up nationally, ranking 27th for completion percentage and 33rd for pass efficiency, while coming in at 29th in points responsible for.

Wassink was twice named MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week this season. He collected Davey O'Brien National "Great 8" Weekly Performer honors after accounting for six touchdowns (five passing, one receiving) and 295 total yards (256 passing, 26 rushing, 13 receiving) in a 71-68 seven-overtime win over Buffalo.

An accountancy major, Wassink maintains a 4.0 grade-point average.

It is the second straight season Western Michigan has had its quarterback be named Academic All-District. Last year Zach Terrell was an Academic All-American as well as recipient of the William V. Campbell Trophy, awarded by the National Football Foundation.
