Men’s Basketball Readies for Showdown with South Carolina Monday

KALAMAZOO, Mich.  –  Fresh off a victory at home to open up the season the Western Michigan men's basketball will travel south for a showdown with 2017 Final Four participant South Carolina on Monday, Nov.13. Tip-Off is set for 8:00 p.m. on the SEC Network

Scouting the Broncos
Western Michigan is coming off a 103-72 victory at home over Siena Heights to open up the season. Against the Saints, the Broncos had six players score in double figures with senior Thomas Wilder leading the way with 16 points. Defensively, WMU forced Siena Heights to commit 19 turnovers, scoring 31 points off those turnovers.

Adida Doing It All
Sophomore Adida Ikongshul had a career-day against Siena Heights, setting career-highs in points (12), field goals (5), field goal attempts (7), assists (3) and minutes played (19). It was the first double digit point performance of his career.

WMU vs. the SEC
The Broncos are 2-4 all-time against the Southeastern Conference (SEC) with victories over South Carolina and Auburn.  

Wilder named to Lou Henson Player of the Year Award Watch List
Wilder was named to the Lou Henson Player of the Year Award Watch List this preseason. The award is given annually to the nation's top Division I mid-major player.

No Stranger to Power Five Competition
WMU is seeking its first victory over a Power Five opponent since defeating Virginia Tech of the ACC in 2006. That season, the Broncos defeated the Hokies, 71-68 at the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla. Since the 2004-05 season, WMU has squared off with 32 Power Five opponents.

Keeping It 100
The senior duo of Wilder and Drake LaMont will play in their 100th game for the Broncos against South Carolina. Of the 99 games played so far, LaMont has started 67 games while Wilder has started 73.

Scouting South Carolina  
South Carolina heads into the Monday showdown with a 1-0 record after defeating Wofford, 73-52 on Friday. A season ago, the Gamecocks made it the 2017 Final Four as a no.7 seed and fell to Gonzaga in the national semifinal.  USC this season is led by junior Chris Silva who against Wofford recorded nine points, 10 rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

What's Next
WMU will begin bracket play at the 11th annual Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Myrtle Beach on Thursday, Nov. 16 versus Tulsa at 8:00 p.m. The Broncos will then square off with either Iowa State or Appalachian State the following day.

WMU Tabbed as Preseason MAC Favorite; Wilder named Preseason All-MAC West
As voted on by the leagues' head coaches and media, the Broncos are the favorite to claim the MAC Tournament championship with 10 votes WMU received 22 of 30 first-place votes to repeat as MAC West champions. Senior guard Thomas Wilder was named to the Preseason All-MAC West team after averaging 19.3 points and 4.3 rebounds last season.

WMU is ranked No.19 in the NBC Sports' Preseason Mid-Major Power Rankings and No.23 in the College Insider Preseason Top 25. WMU is the only school from the MAC to be ranked in both polls.
