Men’s Basketball Hosts Siena Heights in Season Opener Saturday

KALAMAZOO, Mich.  –  The Western Michigan men's basketball team opens up its 2017-18 campaign on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 2:00 p.m. as the Broncos host Siena Heights inside University Arena.

Scouting the Broncos
The Broncos return 10 letterwinners and four starters from last year's squad that won their final eight regular season games to claim the ninth MAC West title in program history. WMU ended the season with a 16-16 overall record and 11-7 in conference play.

Broncos Go 2-0 In Exhibition Play
In exhibition play the Broncos went 2-0 with victories over Lourdes University and Kalamazoo College. WMU cruised to a 106-51 win over Lourdes as junior Josh Davis collected a game-high 29 points. Against neighbor Kalamazoo College, WMU connected on 13 three-pointers to defeat the Hornets, 87-61.

WMU Tabbed as Preseason MAC Favorite; Wilder named Preseason All-MAC West
As voted on by the leagues' head coaches and media, the Broncos are the favorite to claim the MAC Tournament championship with 10 votes WMU received 22 of 30 first-place votes to repeat as MAC West champions. Senior guard Thomas Wilder was named to the Preseason All-MAC West team after averaging 19.3 points and 4.3 rebounds last season.

WMU Ranked in National Preseason Mid-Major Polls
WMU is ranked No.19 in the NBC Sports' Preseason Mid-Major Power Rankings and No.23 in the College Insider Preseason Top 25. WMU is the only school from the MAC to be ranked in both polls.

Home Sweet Home
Since the 2003-04 season, WMU is 58-14 in non-conference home games. The Broncos have claimed double digit wins at home in 15 of the last 16 seasons.

Broncos Square Off With Top Competition
The Brown and Gold have one of the toughest schedule within the MAC. WMU will face two teams that are receiving votes in the AP Top 25 poll and six teams that are ranked or receiving votes in the College Insider Top 25 poll.

Wilder Climbing the WMU Record Books
Wilder returns for his senior season and is looking to move up the WMU record book as he currently ranks 10th in career scoring (1,437), fifth in career FT's made (146), seventh in FT attempts (522) and 11th in career assists (275.).

Scouting Siena Heights
Siena Heights heads into the Saturday contest with an overall record of 1-1 after defeating Trinity Christian (Ill.) and falling to Spring Arbor. The Saints out of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) are averaging 60 points while shooting 42.1 percent from the field this season.

What's Next
Following the contest against Siena Heights the Broncos will travel south to take on 2017 Final Four participant South Carolina on Monday, Nov. 13 in a non-bracketed game of the 11th annual Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Myrtle Beach. WMU will then begin play in the tournament, Thursday, Nov.16 against Tulsa.
