YPSILANTI, Mich. – Western Michigan senior Julia Champion sits in first place after two rounds of the Shirley Spork EMU Invitational at Eagle Crest Golf Club.
Champion opened the first round with a 71 (-1) to tie for first place with Youngstown State's Courtney Shutt. Champion then shot a 74 (+2) to finish the day at 145 (+3) with a two stroke lead on Shutt. She had a steady day on both the par fours and par fives, averaging even on each. She recorded five birdies and 25 pars on the day.
The Broncos sit in third place with a combined score of 607 (+15) and sit seven strokes behind Bowling Green in second and 11 behind Marshall in first place. WMU has a 15 stroke gap on Cleveland State, who sits in fourth place.
"I am very excited for what we did today on the course," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "Our hard work in practice last week leading up to the tournament showed in our play. As a team, we were consistent all day staying within ourselves and grinding when we needed to. We are in a great spot heading into tomorrow and looking forward to a great final round."
Sophomore Jasmine Chee was WMU's second finisher on the day, sitting in a tie for 14th heading into Tuesday's final round after shooting a combined 153. Junior Claire Hernandez sits tied for 21st with a 155 and just behind her is freshman Cameryn Lucia with a 157. Lucia is tied for the top of the field in par 5 scoring at 4.75 and made five birdies on the day as well. Fellow freshman Megan Watkins sits just behind her at 158.
The final round begins on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
