KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team will be participating at the 2017 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championships Presented by Oracle this week (Oct. 19-23), hosted by Michigan. The tournament, which features a qualifying singles draw, main singles draw and a doubles draw, will be played at the Varsity Tennis Center. The winners of each main draw will receive automatic berths to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.

The tournament will get started on Thursday with the opening two rounds of qualifying singles, which features 64 total competitors, four of which are from Western Michigan. Junior
Eric Olivarez has started the season 5-3 in singles play, earning him the No. 1 seed in the qualifying draw while sophomore
Jannik Opitz earned the No. 2 spot with an overall singles record of 8-4. Juniors
Lenhard Haupt and
Nick Schnobel will also be competing in the qualifying draw, which will send eight winners to the main draw.
The main draw will begin on Friday, Oct. 20, with one round and will run through the rest of the tournament. Two Broncos will represent the team, including sophomore No. 79 ranked
Kennosuke Nouchi and senior
Maik Steiner. The main draw also features 64 total competitors.
Same as the main draw, the doubles draw will get started on Friday and end on Monday, Oct. 23. Teams representing WMU are freshman
