Darius Phillips Named Sporting News Midseason All-American

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan senior Darius Phillips has been named to the Midseason All-American list by Sporting News. Phillips, a cornerback, has two return touchdowns on kickoffs this year and has averaged 36.8 yards per return. He also averages 13.4 yards per punt return.

Of the 26 members who make up the midseason list, Phillips is the only player from a Group of 5 school, as the rest of the positions were filled out by the Power 5 and Notre Dame.

The Sporting News is one of five outlets used to determine consensus All-Americans. Final All-American announcements will be made at the end of the season.

Phillips returned had 100-yard returns in back-to-back weeks to start the season, taking kickoffs back at #4 USC and at Michigan State. He was named the Mid-American Conference Special Teams Player of the Week both weeks and was also recognized on the Bleacher Report National Team of the Week, the Pro Football Focus College National Team of the Week and the Paul Hornung Award Weekly Honor Roll.

A dynamic player who has seen action on both sides of the ball, Phillips has 13 career touchdowns scored five different ways. He has five kickoff return touchdowns (including four for 100 yards), four off of interceptions, one from a fumble recovery, one off a punt return and two receiving.
