Men’s Basketball Reveals Locker Room Renovations

KALAMAZOO, Mich.  –  Prior to the start of the 2017-18 season the Western Michigan men's basketball team revealed major renovations to the locker room facilities inside University Arena.

The renovations include 15 new lockers, new flooring, paint and numerous wall graphics. The locker room also features two large televisions, two large glass boards, new lighting, finishes and fixtures. Improvements were also made to the restroom and shower areas.

A main focal point to the new locker room area is the addition of the player's lounge which is highlighted with two large flat screen televisions, multiple video game consoles, a kitchenette and a custom designed WMU logo light fixture. High above are three life-size mannequins that showcase all three uniform designs. The overall size of the locker room was increased by repurposing space in the adjoining weight room, allowing the expansion and creation of the players' lounge area.

Renovations were made possible by the generous donation of Rose Ann Blahnik and her family. Blahnki's husband Lary was a member of the Bronco men's basketball team from 1980-84 and helped them win the 1981 Mid-American Conference championship as a freshman.

Lary died tragically as a result of an automobile accident in July 2011, but his family has ensured his name will be forever associated with Western Michigan University. The Lary Blahnkik Memorial Fund in Plainwell, funds a yearly scholarship for an incoming WMU freshman.

WMU men's basketball also hosts the annual Lary Blahnik Memorial Men's Basketball Alumni Golf Outing in his honor.

Western Michigan men's basketball and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics thank Bryce & Associates, Inc. for the design and renovation of the locker room.
