YPSILANTI, Mich. – Western Michigan senior Julia Champion finished the fall season in style, winning the Shirley Spork EMU Invitational at Eagle Crest Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon.
Champion lived up her namesake after shooting a final round of 73 (+1) to give her a 54-hole total of 218 (+2). The Markham, Ontario native finished two strokes ahead of Marshall's Ylva Forslund for her third collegiate tournament win. Champion finished tied for the tournament lead with Forslund with 38 pars and also had a team-best seven birdies during the three rounds.
"Big congratulations to Julia on her individual win," said head coach Elise Swartout-Mosher. "She played great golf against a good field. As a team we learned a lot this week and throughout the entire fall season. We will keep working hard to get better and better."
The Broncos combined to finish third overall in the 10-team field with a three-round total of 917 (+53). Marshall took first place with 896 (+32) and Bowling Green finished in second with 912 (+48).
Sophomore Jasmine Chee was WMU's second finisher in the tournament, nearly placing in the top 10 with a combined total of 230 (+14). Chee finished just two strokes back from a tie for 10th, and finished in 16th. Freshman Megan Watkins finished with a score of 236 (+20) to tie for 24th, while junior Claire Hernandez finished just behind her at 237 (+21).
The Broncos are off until they head to the Mid-American Conference Match Play Challenge, hosted by BGSU, on Feb. 5-6.
