Broncos Look to Remain Tough at Home Against Toledo

THE TIP-OFF
After playing its first two conference games on the road, Western Michigan will get to enjoy two games in Kalamazoo, hosting Toledo and Kent State this week in the first home Mid-American Conference games of the season. WMU hosts Toledo on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. and Kent State on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN3. The Broncos are looking to  rebound from losses last week at Ohio (89-58) and Akron (66-59).

SCOUTING WESTERN MICHIGAN
Western Michigan maintains a 4-10 record, with all four wins coming at home - vs. Marygrove (90-74), Central Arkansas (80-63), James Madison (74-67) and Alabama A&M (80-50).

> Junior point guard Thomas Wilder is averaging a team-best 16.3 ppg and 4.2 rpg while senior Tucker Haymond is averaging 12.9 ppg and 4.6 rpg. The two have 87 assists combined. Freshman post Brandon Johnson and junior center Drake LaMont are averaging just under double figures at 8.2 ppg and 8.1 ppg, respectively. Johnson is the team's leading rebounder with 5.9 rpg and has three double-doubles this season.

> The Broncos are averaging 72.8 ppg this season and allowing 78.1 ppg defensively. WMU is shooting 43.0 percent from the field, 33.5 percent from three and 67.1 percent from the free-throw line.

WILDER REACHES 1,000 CAREER POINTS
Junior point guard Thomas Wilder entered the 2016-17 season with 821 career points and reached the 1,000-point milestone Dec. 21 at No. 2 UCLA. Wilder had a game-high 22 points, scoring his 1,000th career point with 18:03 left in the game. Wilder became the 41st men's basketball player in WMU history to join the 1,000-career point club.

SCOUTING TOLEDO
Toledo is coached by Tod Kowalczyk in his sixth season. The Rockets (9-6 record) enter today's game winners of their last five in a row. UT opened its conference campaign with a pair of convincing home victories over East Division foes Buffalo (88-56) and Miami (91-76). Senior guard Jonathan Williams ranks second in the MAC with 20.6 ppg. Senior forward Steve Taylor, Jr. ranks second on the team in scoring with 15.1 ppg to go along with a MAC-best 11.8 rpg and a team-high 3.8 apg.

SERIES HISTORY VS. THE ROCKETS
This will be the 143rd meeting between the Broncos and the Rockets, with Toledo owning an 81-61 advantage. Western Michigan is 44-26 however against Toledo in Kalamazoo.

> The Broncos are 16-11 against Toledo under head coach Steve Hawkins. WMU has won eight of the last 12 meetings against the Rockets, dating back 2011. The two sides split meetings last year, with each team winning on their home floor. UT picked up an 89-62 win at Savage Arena on Feb. 2 and WMU won 70-64 in Kalamazoo on March 1.

LAST TIME THEY MET
Western Michigan rallied from an 11-point second half deficit to defeat Toledo, 70-64, in the Broncos' final home game of the season last year. Thomas Wilder finished with five steals, four coming in the second half, and a team-high 18 points. Tucker Haymond recorded his first career double-double, also pouring in 18 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. Center Seth Dugan chipped in 10 points. Haymond and Wilder each had three assists.
