Men's Tennis Heads to Minneapolis for Pair of Matches

Head coach Dave Morin needs one win to break the career wins record at WMU.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team is looking to rebound from its first loss of the young spring season last weekend with a pair of matches in Minneapolis, Minn. The Broncos will first face Minnesota on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 10 a.m. and then battle Green Bay in a neutral setting on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 10 a.m.

Head coach Dave Morin enters this weekend with 348 career wins at WMU, tied with Jack Vredevelt for the most in school history as he has his WMU squad out to a 2-1 start to the season. Minnesota will come in at a perfect 3-0 and Green Bay enters at 0-2.

Senior Matt Hamilton is the lone member of the team with a perfect record this spring at 3-0, all coming at No. 3. Freshman Kennosuke Nouchi (No. 1), junior Maik Steiner (No. 2), freshman Jannik Opitz (No. 4) and sophomore Matej Svjetlicic (No. 5) all enter at 2-1 this spring while Opitz leads the team with a 14-2 overall record.

In doubles play, senior Daniel Loebel/Nouchi are fresh off being named the Mid-American Conference's Doubles Team of the Week after going 2-0 to open the season. Junior Billy Heckman/sophomore Nick Schnobel lead the team in wins with a 9-3 record.

Following the matches against the Golden Gophers and Phoenix, the Broncos will head to Tennessee to face Vanderbilt and Middle Tennessee State on Feb. 4 and Feb. 5, respectively. WMU returns home to face Michigan State on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Noon.
