KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan track and field team continues its trek through the Big Ten, heading to the Jack Johnson Classic at the University of Minnesota on Friday and Saturday.

In addition to the host Golden Gophers, the Broncos will also take on Marquette, South Dakota, Manitoba, Nebraska-Omaha, Iowa Central and the University of Chicago. The annual Jack Johnson classic honors the memory of Jack Johnson, Gopher equipment manager who passed away in 2006 after serving in his role for over three decades.

"We've seen a step up in competition every week," said head coach Kelly Lycan. "We have some tough meets coming up like the Meyo Invitational and this is a good chance for us to get in some good marks to set up good competition in those meets."

This weekend marks the first chance to compete in the pentathlon for WMU. Western Michigan will send out the sophomore pair of Allison Hufnagel and Diana Holsey. Both competed in the pentathlon at last season's indoor Mid-American Conference Championship.

The rest of the events begin on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. WMU will feature in the shot put, long jump, triple jump and high jump for the field events. In the running events the team competes in the 60-meter dash and hurdles, the 200 and 400-meter dashes, 600-meter run, 800-meter run, 3,000-meter run and the 4x400-meter relay.

Western Michigan heads to the famed Meyo Invitational at the University of Notre Dame next Friday and Saturday.
