KALAMAZOO, Mich. – While some players will be competing at the ITA All-American in Tulsa, Okla., the rest of the Western Michigan men's tennis team will head to the Toledo Rocket Invitational from Friday, Sept. 30 to Oct. 2.
Joining WMU and Toledo at the Rocket Invitational will be 10 other teams from around the Midwest region including Case Western, Detroit, Duquesne, Michigan, Niagara, Purdue, Saint Francis, Valpo, Wayne State and Youngstown State. The Rocket Invitational will be a hidden dual formatted tournament, with WMU slated to play Friday at 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday is still TBA. All of the times are based on weather.
The Broncos kicked off the season last weekend as the host of the WMU/Jack Vredevelt Invitational, where the team finished 22-6 in singles and 10-5 in doubles. Sophomore Nick Schnobel and junior Billy Heckman are both off to a 3-0 start in doubles, while six other players are 2-1.
In singles play, sophomores Matej Svjetlicic and Eric Olivarez, along with freshman Kennosuke Nouchi and Jannik Opitz all opened the season with 3-0 starts. Seniors Matt Hamilton and Daniel Loebel are each 2-1, having each won their final two matches. Schnobel and sophomore Kris Knof are each 2-1, while junior Maik Steiner is 1-0.
Hamilton, Steiner, Loebel and Svjetlicic will head to the ITA All-American, which starts on Oct. 1. Follow the Broncos on Twitter @WMUMensTennis for all updates about the team!
