Bronco Singles Dominate on Final Day of Vredevelt Invitational

Singles finished 9-1 overall on Sunday.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – In the first tournament of the season, the Western Michigan men's tennis team dominated the final day of the 2016 WMU/Vredevelt Invitational, with the singles finishing with an impressive 9-1 record.

"In our first tournament this season, we were able to evaluate our younger guys and the coaching staff really liked what they saw," head coach Dave Morin said. "In singles, we had an exceptional tournament going 9-1, but we still need to improve on our doubles. We were hot and cold, but we will get to work in practice trying to get the players more familiar and comfortable with their partners."

The Bronco doubles teams didn't have the success they were hoping for to open the day, but bounced back nicely in the second and final round on Sunday. The duo of Nick Schnobel and Billy Heckman moved to 2-0 together with a win in the opening round, while the duo of Kris Knof and Eric Olivarez went 2-0 on Sunday after opening their season up with a loss on Saturday. Matt Hamilton/Maik Steiner, who were both All-Mid-American Conference selections a year ago, went 2-1 on the weekend and were named the Most Outstanding Doubles Team.

Teams were switched up in the final round of doubles, as the teams of Kennosuke Nouchi/Daniel Loebel and Jannik Opitz/Schnobel helped WMU go 4-1 in the second round of doubles with wins.

In singles play, Matej Svjetlicic, Olivarez, Opitz and Nouchi all stayed unbeaten with wins. Maik Steiner, who sat out of singles yesterday, earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Malm of Cleveland State while Daniel Loebel topped Mick of Cleveland State 6-2, 6-3. Both Schnobel and Heckman earned wins over opponents from Washington University-St. Louis. Hamilton earned a tough comeback win over Mirko Radosevic of Cleveland State to move to 2-1 this season.

The Broncos will head to the Toledo Rocket Invitational next weekend. To keep up with WMU, follow the team on Twitter @WMUMensTennis for all updates.
