KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team opened up its 2016-17 season with an impressive day one of the WMU/Vredevelt Invitational, as the team finished 16-7 overall in one round of doubles and two of singles.
"Overall I thought we had a good day with a high winning percentage in singles and doubles but we definitely need to improve our performance in doubles," assistant coach Nadin Indre said. "I think we have a lot of talent all through our lineup and we saw that with our freshman going undefeated in singles."
The day started with one round of doubles, as WMU went 3-2 overall. The duos of Maik Steiner/Matt Hamilton, Matej Svejetlicic/Kennesuke Nouchi and Nick Schnobel/Billy Heckman all earned wins to open the season.
Following doubles, two rounds of singles were played and the Broncos came out 13-5 overall. The newcomers finished 6-0, as Nouchi, Jannik Opitz and Kris Knof all went 2-0. Svjetlicic and Eric Olivarez each opened their seasons 2-0 while both Hamilton and Daniel Loebel bounced back from round one losses to win in round two.
The Broncos will continue the action with day two of the Vredevelt Invitational starting Sunday, Sept. 25 at 9 a.m. at Sorensen Courts. Follow the Broncos on Twitter @WMUMensTennis for all updates about the team!
