McNulty's Wonder Goal Power's Men's Soccer Past Fort Wayne, 2-1

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan soccer team improved to 3-0 after a 2-1 win over Fort Wayne in front of a packed crowd at the WMU Soccer Complex on Friday afternoon.

Jay McIntosh and Connor McNulty both scored and Brandon Bye picked up his team-leading third assist in the first home win for the Broncos this season.

After a scoreless first half Bye played McIntosh into the box on the left side and the junior forward slotted it past Fort Wayne's keeper into the right corner of the net for the break-through goal in the 60th minute.

McNulty's game-winner came in the 63rd minute on an absolute stunner from 35-yards out to give WMU a 2-0 lead. A Mastodon defender cleared a pass from the top of the box and the sophomore midfielder struck the ball on the volley. The ball flew past the Fort Wayne defenders and curled into the net for his first goal of the season.

Fort Wayne was able to press the Broncos in the final 15 minutes and cut the lead to 2-1. In the 85th minute the Mastodons earned a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. With the ball set slightly left to the center of the box Thilo Korperich fired the ball past the wall and into the net. It was the first goal surrendered by Western Michigan this season.

WMU maintained possession and eliminated a few threats during the final five minutes to seal the win. Overall the Broncos outshot the Mastodons 13-9 on the day and held a 7-2 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks were fairly even at 7-6 WMU, but all six of Fort Wayne's came in the first half, while the Broncos picked up possession in the second half and earned five.

Bye had WMU's best chance in the first half on a header in the 12th minute. Diego Lopez crossed the ball from the right side to Bye, who was deep in the box towards the back post. The Portage, Mich., native struck the ball with some power off his head but Fort Wayne keeper Jorge Trujillo made the save.

Western Michigan is back home again on Monday, Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. when it hosts IUPUI.
