BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Western Michigan women's tennis team opened the 2016-17 season on a high note at the Hoosier Classic on the campus of Indiana, with the Broncos coming out of day one with an impressive 11-5 record.
"We had a good day overall going 11-5 in singles and doubles," second year head coach Ryan Tomlinson said. "With only four days of team practice, we struggled more in doubles than normal but overall we did a nice job. Looking forward to getting more matches tomorrow and improving each time out."
Each member of WMU played one singles match on day one, with the team finishing 6-2 overall. Senior Tracy Kuhle, who was named Second Team All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) last season, earned a 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-4) win in Flight One. Both junior Olivia Myers and sophomore Katja Fevralev earned a win in Flight Two, while senior Barbare Eristavi and sophomore Denise Azcui each earned a win in Flight Three. Senior Meika Ashby earned a win as well, beating Denise Buberl of Lipscomb 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles play, each duo played two matches as the team finished 5-3 overall. The duo of Ashby/Eristavi went 2-0 earning wins over teams from SIU-Edwardsville and Indiana. In the round robin draw, the team of Kuhle/Gabrela Slavova won both matches by a score of 8-1 over teams from Indiana and Wright State.
