EAST LANSING, Mich. – The duo of sophomore Sarah Anderson and junior Hanne Christensen led the way for the Western Michigan cross country team at the Spartan Invitational, which featured 29 teams and nearly 400 student-athletes from five different divisions.
"Sarah Anderson and Hanne Christensen each ran together pretty much that whole time together; when you get a big race like this it's hard to stay with your teammates but they did a nice job of that," head coach Kelly Lycan said. "For the freshman it was the first time they've been in a big meet like that, it was a big learning experience for them."
Anderson finished in 25th place overall with a personal record 6K time of 22:27 while Christensen was right behind in 45th place with a time of 23:00. Senior Amy Littlefield finished in 78th with a time of 23:37, freshman Kristin McGahan came in 131st with a time of 24:17 and senior Daya Wagh finished in 137th with a time of 24:27 to round out WMU's top-five.
Although the meet wasn't technically scored, the Broncos finished ahead of a pair of Mid-American Conference (MAC) foes in Kent State and Central Michigan. WMU finished third in the group of division one teams.
Other finishers for the Broncos include sophomore Makenzie Evers (24:41), freshman Brittney Hall (24:54), freshman Haley Ritsema (24:58), freshman Sydney Del Valle (25:08), freshman Abigail Shaver (25:11), freshman Katie Menke (25:57), sophomore Emily Davis (27:01), freshman Autumn Lewis (27:14), freshman Yadira Rodriguez (27:20) and freshman Mattie Goodwin (28:09).
