KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michgian men's soccer team wrapped up its preseason with a convincing 2-0 win over DePaul at the WMU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Brandon Bye netted both WMU goals just 3:43 from each other in the second half and the team dominated in possession to limit the Blue Demon's chances.
Drew Shepherd needed to make just one save on the day as DePaul was held to just six total shots.Â
The Blue Demons proved tough to break down in the first half but Bye opened it up in the 59th minute with a header into the net from the middle of the box. A foul was called in the WMU end and junior center back
Zach Bock the free kick down the field and into the box. Bye out-jumped the opposing keeper and defender to head it into the net and give the Broncos a 1-0 lead.Â
Bye added his second in the 63rd minute.
Diego Lopez forced a turnover at the top of the box and
Connor McNulty fed Bye on the left-side. The Portage, Mich., native opened up the keeper and slotted it into the right corner to put the game away.
"In the second half we just talked about playing simple," said head coach
Chad Wiseman. "Limiting your touches, finding a little bit of rythm, and I think you saw us find that rythm. We were able to keep the ball for long stretches and keep DePaul pinned in their end."Â
Wiseman was able to get valuable experience for many on his squad with 23 total players getting into the game for Western Michigan.
The Broncos open up the regular season with a road trip to Marshall on Friday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. and then at Dayton on Sunday at 3 p.m. WMU returns to Kalamazoo for its home-opener against Fort Wayne on Friday, Sept. 2 at 5 p.m.Â
