KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan Division of Intercollegiate Athletics and Director of Athletics Kathy Beauregard are saddened to announce passing of former Bronco student-athlete and legendary sports broadcaster John Saunders.

Saunders passed away unexpectedly at the age of 61 on Wednesday. He was a member of the 1975-76 WMU hockey team, along with his brother Bernie. John visited WMU's campus in 2013 to help induct Bernie into the WMU Hockey Ring of Honor. Bernie is also a member of the WMU Athletics Hall of Fame.

"We're extremely proud that John and his brother played for the Broncos," Beauregard said. "Western Michigan, myself and several of my staff personally have longtime ties with the Saunders family. John certainly was a consummate Bronco who went on to become a national treasure with fans from around the world. It was a sad day when we received a phone call."

"He was passionate," Beauregard continued. "He loved what he did. He was self-made, worked his way up the ESPN/ABC world. He worked extremely hard but also never forgot where he came from. (John) Was definitely a family person, as much as he traveled."

Robin Hook, Associate Athletic Director and close friend of the Saunders family said "We were extremely saddened by the news of the passing of John Saunders.  Everyone associated with Western Michigan University and WMU Athletics, who knew John, were so proud of his career accomplishments.  Known around the world for his broadcast talent, John was also a caring and giving personality as demonstrated in his association with The V Foundation and his behind the scenes mentoring of young professionals in the broadcasting field.  A loving father and husband, John was a dear friend to WMU.  We will truly miss John and want to pass along our deepest sympathy and condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues."

After leaving WMU, Saunders attended Ryerson University in Toronto and began his career in broadcasting. He joined ESPN in 1986 and had been with the company ever since. Saunders is most famously recognized as a studio host for ABC/ESPN's college football broadcasts and took over for legendary reporter Dick Schaap to host The Sports Reporters.

Saunders is survived by his wife Wanda and his daughters, Aleah and Jenna.
