Broncos Ground Eagles, 3-1

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan volleyball team completed the weekend sweep after a 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 30-28, 25-22) win over Mid-American Conference rival Eastern Michigan on Saturday night at University Arena.

Three Broncos finished the night with double-digit kills, led by Bailey Schnell's game-high 15. Sydney LeMay had 14 on the night, while senior Alysia Baznik had 12. Baznik also had 11 digs for a double-double in her final match at University Arena. Kathleen Reilly had a team-high 25 digs. Sophomore setter Mary Murphy also had a double-double, leading the match with 49 assists and 10 digs.

Western Michigan (10-18, 5-9 MAC) trailed for most of the first set, but a key time out when trailing 18-14 turned the set around. WMU went on a 12-3 run to get the win 25-21.

Eastern Michigan jumped out to an early lead and never trailed during the second set. The Broncos attempted a late rally, getting within one at 24-23 after a 5-2 run. WMU had a chance to tie the set but a service error gave the Eagles the set win and tied up the match, 1-1, heading into the break.

In the third set the two teams traded leads and the Broncos used a 7-2 run to build a 20-16 lead. Eastern Michigan responded with a 7-3 run to erase the lead and tie it up at 23-23. The Eagles took a slight edge at 25-24 and were sitting on set point until a kill by LeMay tied it up at 25. WMU scored three of the next four points to sit on set point at 27-26 but a kill by Kelly Ferguson tied it up and then a kill by Ariel Hamby gave EMU a chance at set point. WMU responded and closed the set out with three straight points on a kill by Nicole Kinser and two Eastern Michigan errors.

The teams traded leads early on in the fourth set until a 6-1 run gave the Broncos a 12-8 edge. WMU increased its gap to 20-13 after an EMU attack error. The Eagles responded with a 7-2 run to cut the Bronco lead to 22-20. A service error and another attack error by Eastern Michigan put WMU on match point 24-20. EMU added two more points to put the Broncos under pressure until Schnell finished off the set, 25-22, and the match.

Western Michigan heads on the road to wrap up the 2016 regular season next weekend. The Broncos head to Ball State on Friday night for a 7 p.m. start and then to Toledo on Saturday for a 5 p.m. start.
