Big Third Period Leads Bronco Hockey to 6-3 Victory Over Miami

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan (4-2-1, 1-2-0 NCHC) erupted for three goals in the third period to take game one of this weekend's series against Miami, 6-3. Sophomore forward Matheson Iacopelli earned first star honors after netting two of WMU's third-period goals and tallying an assist on the game-tying goal in the second period.

The game was a back-and-forth contest through the first two periods before the Broncos finished off the RedHawks in the final 20 minutes. Sophomore Jade McMullen tucked away the first goal of the night at 8:36 in the first period, but the RedHawks' Anthony Louis responded just over a minute later to tie the score at 1-1.

Sophomore defenseman Corey Schuenemann put WMU back up 2-1 two minutes into the second period, racing with the puck from center ice down the left side before going top shelf, glove-side, unassisted. Louis again had a quick answer for Miami, scoring his second goal of the evening, on the power play, a minute and a half later.

Miami briefly pulled ahead in the second period when Kiefer Sherwood found the back of the net on another RedHawk power play. The Broncos would knot the score at 3-3 with 9:30 left in the period when Iacopelli sent a quick feed across the goal to junior forward Fredrick Tiffels who was able to slap it home on the backside.

The third period belonged to the Broncos, as Western Michigan turned a close game into a blowout. Junior defensman Paul Stoykewych wrapped around the net and sent the puck off a Miami defender into the goal to give WMU a 4-3 advantage with 13:45 left in the game.

Iacopelli sealed the Bronco victory with his two goals, which came just two minutes and 43 seconds apart. His first came with 5:58 remaining, as came around the net stick side and flipped in his sixth goal of the season. He buried his team-leading seventh goal moments later, unassisted.

Freshman defenseman Cam Lee registered assists on the goal by Tiffels and Iacopelli's first goal. Taylor Fleming, Lawton Courtnall, Michael Rebry, Aidan Muir and Sheldon Dries each had an assist as well.

Western Michigan and Miami (3-3-2, 0-1-0 NCHC) return to Lawson Arena Saturday night to close out the weekend series. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. The game can be seen on NCHC.tv, as well as heard live on the Bronco Radio Network.
