KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's tennis team wrapped up the 2016 Bronco Invite, going 8-0 at West Hills Athletic Club on Sunday.
WMU claimed championships in the top flight with Tracy Kuhle defeating Lewis' Dora Andrejszki 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (4). Melina Lyubomirova defeated Lewis' Nora Mindiyarova 6-2, 6-4 to claim the Black Flight championship.
"We had a great weekend, we were 35-5 overall," said head coach Ryan Tomlinson. "We lost in the doubles final but won every other flight that we were in. The girls did a nice job of doing the things we have been working on since the last tournament. We will continue working and getting better day in and day out."
Instead of teammates Barbare Eristavi and Denis Azcui facing off for the championship in the Gold Flight, the two played the runners up from each other's' semifinal matches from the previous day. Eristavi defeated IPUIU's Mariella Pessina 6-4, 6-2 and Azcui defeated IUPUI's Samantha Mayer 6-0, 6-2.
The same scenario played out in the Brown Flight, with Meika Ashby defeating Green Bay's Maria Neff 6-0, 6-1 and Gabriela Slavova defeating Valparaiso's Meg Modesto 6-0, 6-1. Katja Fevralev also defeated Sara Sharif from IUPUI 6-2, 6-3, while Olivia Meyers dispatched Oakland's Daria Artamonova 6-0, 6-0.
Up next for the Broncos is the ITA Midwest Regional and the Indiana Alternative Regional Oct. 21-23.
