KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Western Michigan men's basketball assistant coach
Larry Farmer is among an eight-member group that will be inducted into the Colorado High School Activities Association Hall of Fame, Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2017.
Farmer played collegiately at UCLA under legendary head coach John Wooden from 1970-73 and was a member of three NCAA championship teams during a stretch in which UCLA captured seven straight national titles. In addition, Farmer has the distinguished honor of being the winningest player in NCAA history, losing only once in 90 career games. Farmer was drafted by Cleveland in the NBA and Denver of the ABA in 1973, but instead went into coaching. He first was an assistant at UCLA from 1973-81 and later was the head coach at UCLA, Weber State and Loyola-Chicago.
Farmer is now entering his sixth overall season as an assistant coach with the Western Michigan men's basketball program and third in a row. He is in his second stint with the Broncos, having served as an assistant coach from 2010-12 previously. Farmer was key in developing the Broncos' first NBA player in over a decade, as two-time All-MAC center Shayne Whittington was signed to the NBA's Indiana Pacers the summer after the 2014 Mid-American Conference championship season.
The 28th CHSAA Hall of Fame class depicts the rich history of the Association, along with providing real-life examples of what participation, coaching and advocating for students can do. Each of these people has established themselves as a role model for today's young people seeking their way to adulthood.
The 2016 class includes three of the state's top former athletes in Jeff Campbell (Battle Mountain High School),
Larry Farmer (Manual HS) and Mary Shea (Thornton HS), along with legendary coaches Debbie Cook (Meeker HS), Donnie Day (Thomas Jefferson HS) and Ron Vlasin (Merino/Littleton Public Schools). Rounding out the class are former Grand Junction wrestler, coach and advocate Ray Coca and former Pueblo Chieftain sports editor Judy Hildner.
