SILVER LAKE, Ohio – Western Michigan's Julia Champion and Jasmin Chee were name co-champions of the 2016 Silver Lake Shootout after a two-hole playoff on Monday at Silver Lake Golf Course.
Champion and Chee finished with two-round scores of 150 (+6), along with Akron's Makayla Dull. The trio proceeded to a playoff but after two holes it was ended due to darkness and Champion and Chee were declared co-champions. WMU's Kaitlyn Watkins and Claire Hernandez also combined to help the Broncos shoot a 624 (+48) to take second place ahead of Ohio, Bowling Green and Central Michigan. Hosts Akron took first with a score of 614 (+38).
This is the second straight tournament finishing as a medalist for Champion, who won the 2016 Rocket Classic back on Oct. 11. For Chee, a freshman, it's the first time she has claimed the top spot in her brief college career. Champion shot an opening round 72 (E) to take the lead after the first round and followed it up with a 78. Chee was tied in third place after the first round but charged up the leaderboard in the second round 74. The Hong Kong native led the tournament in pars with 27.
Watkins finished tied for fourth after a two-round score of 152 (+8). The senior shot an opening round of 77 and then added a second-rounds of 75. Hernandez shot an 88 in the first round and improved her score to an 84 in the second round and finished with a combined score of 172 (+28).
Western Michigan is off until the Mid-American Conference Match Play tournament in Lakewood, Fla., on Feb. 13-14.
