BUFFALO, N.Y.- For the third time in as many conference games, Western Michigan walked away with a draw, battling Buffalo to a 1-1 tie on the road Friday night. The Broncos are undefeated in Mid-American Conference play with a 0-0-3 record and are 8-4-4 overall on the season.
Six of Western Michigan's last seven games have gone into extra play, including five that were decided by double overtime.
How It Happened:
Both goals in the match were scored in the second period. The Broncos were the first to get on the board as freshman
Anthony Bowie tallied his second career goal off an assist by senior
Edu Jimenez in the 66th minute. It was Jimenez's 21st career assist. Reigning MAC Player of the Year Russell Cicerone salvaged the tie for Buffalo, scoring the game-tying goal with 52 seconds left in regulation.
The Broncos attacked early and nearly had a goal just two minutes in as senior
Diego Lopez took a hard shot up close. but he was turned away by UB keeper Joseph Kuta. WMU had five shots in the first half, while Buffalo only managed three. Bronco goalkeeper
Drew Shepherd made two saves in each half.
Bowie had a great look in the 65th minute as he ripped a shot following a free kick by Jimenez. Kuta again came up with a great save. Bowie however would not be denied again just over a minute later, as he gathered another ball placed into the box by Jimenez and buried his attempt on the left.
Shepherd stepped up in goal for the Broncos making saves in the 73rd and 83rd minutes. WMU looked as though it would tally its first mark in the conference win column, but Cicerone played spoiler.
As the clock began to tick down into the final minute of the match, UB's Alec Fisher whipped a cross into the box and Cicerone rose above to knock in his MAC leading 12th goal of the season, sending game into overtime.
Both defenses held strong for the final two 10-minute overtime stanzas and the game ended in the 1-1 draw. In the 106th minute, WMU saw what would have been a game-winning goal called off as the Broncos were whistled for a foul as the play developed.
Buffalo's record moved to 9-3-2 and 1-1-1 in the MAC with the result.
Quoting Wiseman:
"Our performance today was again very good," said WMU head coach
Chad Wiseman. "From the opening whistle we were on our front foot. We created three of the best chances in the game in the opening 10 minutes. Credit Buffalo's goalkeeper for making a couple very big saves early. Â
"In the second half I thought we came out with the right mentality and energy. We were able to keep Buffalo pinned in its own end for long stretches. We were finally able to break through with a great first time flick from Edu and Bowie with very good composer on the finish.Â
"The goal in the final minute was a tough one to swallow. Russell is a great college player and he made a big play. We did an absolute fantastic job on him throughout the match but lost track of him for a couple seconds and he did what great players do, he made us pay. Â
"Our character and toughness to come back out for overtime after conceding that late in the game was something I was very proud of. The 110 minutes as a whole, I thought we were very good. We will need to carry that play into the West Virginia game next week."
