KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan women's soccer team hosted Akron on Sunday, with the game finishing in a 0-0 tie. Prior to the game the team honored its senior class, a class of seven women that will go down in program history.
It was originally made up of Liz Abro, Mackenzie Barber, Jewell Edwards, Megan Ross and Olivia Vollmers in 2013. Makenzie Larson and Candice Uhl both joined a year later, but combined they have been the winningest class over a four-year period in Western Michigan history with 47 wins. It has the potential to grow, with three more regular season games and then the Mid-American Conference Tournament.
The MAC Tournament is a familiar place for that group, having made the finals in each of the past three seasons. The Bronco won in 2013 and 2015, while suffering a 1-0 loss to Buffalo in 2014. Combined the class is 8-1 all-time in the MAC Tournament.
Not only has the group help raise the bar of the program, it's a very special one for first-year head coach Lauren Sinacola, who came in as a first-year assistant coach in 2013.
"This is a really special group of girls," said Sinacola. "They have definitely touched my heart in a way I hadn't experienced yet as a coach. It's been great to see them through their entire four years and they've really helped bring this program to another level. We still have a good chunk of our season left to compete and do great things as a team, but I don't think this program would really be here without this class."
The group of seniors just needs one more win to add another notch in the program's belt. A win would give the Broncos 10 this season and they would become the only class to win 10 or more games in a year, every year they competed.
Western Michigan is on the road on Thursday at Bowling Green for a 7 p.m. kickoff and then heads to Toledo on Sunday for a 1 p.m. showdown. WMU hosts Northern Illinois on Thursday, Oct. 27 for the final game or the regular season, at 3 p.m.
